Location: South-eastern Asia. Situated between Malaysia and Indonesia. It is about 137km north of the equator.

Climate: Tropical climate. Hot, humid, rainy. There are two distinct monsoon seasons – North-eastern monsoon (December to March) and South-western monsoon (June to September). Average temperature ranges from 25 C to 32 C. December is the coolest month and May the hottest.

Status: Parliamentary republic
Government: Unicameral Parliament system based on the Westminster system. Eighty four seats; members elected by popular vote to serve five-year terms.

Language: English, Malay, Mandarin, Tamil
Education system: Mandatory from age 6. After six years of primary education children sit the PSLE or Primary School Leaving Examination. This examination is also used to place students into different secondary schools which have four different “tracks”.
Secondary schooling ranges from 4 to 5 years depending on what ‘track’ the student is on. Further study is then at a junior college prior to applying to university.
There are a number of world-class national universities in Singapore. In addition, there are a number of international institutions that have established campuses there: such as INSEAD, the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business and Duke University.

Residency/Working Requirements: Work Permits are dealt with by the Ministry of Manpower. There are several kinds of work permit, depending on the salary range and the role itself.  Applicants should contact the Singapore Ministry or Manpower for additional information.
